SAFE START

Spokane

Spokane’s Safe Start Initiative is one of nine communities that are model programs intended to reduce the risk of violence exposure in young children.

millions of children in the United States are exposed to trauma that threatens their development

Every year, millions of children in the United States are exposed to trauma that threatens their development because of child abuse, child neglect, and domestic violence. There is a significant body of research evidence that these traumatized children suffer both immediate and long-term injury because of this trauma. School failure, developmental problems, mental health complications, and greater involvement in the juvenile justice system are some of the costs of childhood exposure to violence in the family.

Spokane Safe Start is part of our community’s effort to break the cycle of violence.

The US Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention funds the Spokane Safe Start Initiative. The program was launched in May 2000 and is expected to receive roughly $2.5 million over a five-year period to support a community plan to reduce violence exposure risk.
